Final Call for Filmmakers: Anacostia Shorts 2026 Submissions Close May 9

The countdown is officially underway for filmmakers to submit their work to Anacostia Shorts 2026, with the final deadline set for May 9. Now in its fourth year, the annual short film contest—presented by the Valley Place Arts Collaborative in partnership with the Open Road Film Festival—continues to highlight compelling stories rooted in Anacostia and across the DMV.

This community-centered festival invites filmmakers to showcase short films and documentaries that reflect the culture, history, and lived experiences of Anacostia. Whether you filmed your project in the neighborhood or your story draws inspiration from it, this is an opportunity to share your work with an engaged and local audience.

Festival Dates and Programming

Anacostia Shorts 2026 will take place from May 30 through June 1, offering both in-person and virtual experiences:

  • Saturday, May 30 & Sunday, May 31: In-person screenings at Honfleur Gallery, followed by Q&A sessions with participating filmmakers

  • Monday, June 1: Virtual screening livestreamed on YouTube from 6:00 to 8:30 PM

Winners will be announced on May 31, with cash prizes awarded to the top three films:

  • First Place: $1,000

  • Second Place: $500

  • Third Place: $250

Submission Details

Filmmakers have until Saturday, May 9 to submit their entries. Submission fees are structured to remain accessible:

  • Regular entry: $20

  • Discounted “Gold Fee”: $15

  • Student rate: $10

Selected films will be announced on May 16, giving creators time to prepare for screenings and audience engagement.

Tickets for the festival are now available:

  • $15 for in-person screenings

  • $10 for virtual access

  • $10 discounted tickets for Anacostia residents and students (with code)
