2024 JUNETEENTH COMMEMORATIVE T-SHIRT DESIGN

I am pleased to present my design for the Juneteenth celebration t-shirt, honoring the profound significance of this day and the vibrant spirit of Washington, D.C. This design features a woman in traditional dress, holding a lantern in one hand and a paintbrush in the other, symbolizing the journey towards enlightenment, creativity, and progress.

The lantern represents the guiding light of freedom and knowledge, while the paintbrush signifies the power of art and culture in shaping our community’s identity. Behind the woman stands the iconic Frederick Douglass building, illuminated by a full moon. This imagery pays tribute to Frederick Douglass, a pivotal figure in the fight for freedom and equality, whose legacy continues to inspire.

Juneteenth marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrates the ongoing quest for justice and equality. By featuring a native Anacostian woman, this design honors the rich history and cultural contributions of the residents east of the river in Anacostia. It reflects the enduring spirit of resilience and progress that characterizes both Juneteenth and the community.

Washington, D.C., with its deep historical roots and diverse population, plays a crucial role in the narrative of freedom and civil rights. This design not only celebrates Juneteenth but also underscores the importance of recognizing and honoring the contributions of the local community in the broader context of American history.
