Ribbon Cutting Celebrates The Ana Townhomes in Ward 8

On September 12, 2025, Mayor Muriel Bowser joined Ward 8 residents to celebrate the ribbon cutting of The Ana Townhomes, a new family-sized townhome development located just steps from the Anacostia Metro Station. The 20-unit community is designed to expand affordable homeownership opportunities in the District, with most units targeted toward workforce housing. Six of the homes are specifically designated for households earning between 50% and 80% of the Median Family Income (MFI).

“This is what we want for Washingtonians — turning vacant spaces into new homes, and in this case, affordable homeownership opportunities right near public transportation,” said Mayor Bowser during the celebration. “At a time when homeownership feels out of reach to so many people, The Ana Townhomes are putting it back in reach for 20 more families in DC.”

Expanding Affordable Homeownership

The $1.6 million project was made possible through the DC Housing Finance Agency’s Housing Investment Platform (HIP), which partners with developers to reduce upfront costs and bring more family-sized homes to the market. HIP focuses on serving “the missing middle” — families who may earn too much to qualify for traditional affordable rental programs but struggle to find new three- and four-bedroom homes at attainable prices.

“The Housing Investment Platform is delivering vital homeownership opportunities to residents often referred to as ‘The Missing Middle,’” said Christopher E. Donald, DCHFA’s Executive Director and CEO. “The Ana Townhomes project ensures that families who contribute to the fabric of our city have the opportunity to establish permanent roots, raise their children, and build generational wealth within the District.”

From Vacant Lot to Vibrant Community

The project was developed by H2 Communities, H2 Design Build, and ASSET Management Consulting on land previously owned by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. The District acquired the underutilized lot in 2014, and in 2019 announced plans to transform it into housing. Each of the new townhomes features three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a one-car garage, and averages 1,800 square feet.

A Commitment to Housing in DC

The Ana Townhomes reflect Mayor Bowser’s ongoing commitment to increasing affordable housing and homeownership opportunities. Since taking office, she has invested more than $1.4 billion in the Housing Production Trust Fund. Her proposed FY26 budget, Grow DC, includes another $100 million to continue advancing the District’s Growth Agenda — a comprehensive plan to ensure DC remains a place where residents can live, work, and thrive.
