Feb 21 | The Poetic Checkmate Chess Tournament + Poetry Slam
Anacostia is set to host a unique cultural and competitive experience with the Poetic Checkmate Chess Tournament Series: The Initiative, which brings together fast-paced chess and powerful spoken-word poetry for one dynamic afternoon.
Taking place from 1:00–5:00 PM at Busboys and Poets Anacostia (2004 Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE), the event blends strategic thinking with creative expression, creating space for both sharp minds and bold voices.
A Fast-Paced Chess Tournament
The chess competition features a 4-round, 10-minute rapid (unrated) format designed to keep the energy high and the matches exciting. Players can compete in two sections:
Open Section: Winner takes all – $150
Beginners Section: Winner takes all – $50
Chessboards and clocks will be provided at the event, making it easy for players to focus on the game and the competition.
Spoken Word That Speaks Life
Between chess rounds, attendees will experience a poetry slam showcasing spoken word performances that uplift, inspire, and challenge audiences. The poetry competition is also winner-take-all, with $100 awarded to the top performer, reinforcing the event’s theme of creativity, courage, and expression.

Participation requires online registration only, and tournaments are known to sell out quickly. There will be no cash accepted at the event, so advance registration is essential for anyone planning to compete.
