JUNE 28 | Film Screening in Anacostia Explores the Past, Present, and Future of Black DC

A special film event is coming to Anacostia later this month, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to reflect on the history, culture, and resilience of Black Washington, DC.

On Sunday, June 28, the Go-Go Museum & Café will host a screening of CHOCOLATE: A Motion-Poetry Homage to Black D.C., a short film directed by Eliamani Ismail. Through a blend of poetry, music, portraiture, and movement, the film celebrates the people and communities that have shaped the city while exploring the impact of change on longtime residents and neighborhoods.

The film has already received recognition as an Official Selection at the DC/DOX Film Festival, the Washington, DC International Film Festival, and Anacostia Shorts.

Following the screening, attendees are invited to participate in a community panel discussion focused on gentrification, cultural memory, and the future of Black DC. The conversation will provide an opportunity for residents, artists, and community members to share perspectives on the city's ongoing transformation and the importance of preserving local history and culture.

The event will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Go-Go Museum & Café, located at 1920 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE in the heart of Historic Anacostia.

For those interested in film, local history, community conversations, or the evolving story of Washington, DC, this event offers a unique opportunity to engage with all four.
