JAN 14 - FEB 18 | Stevens Jay Carter: Modern Master at Honfleur Gallery
Opening Reception Saturday, January 14, 2023, 5pm - 8pm
Honfleur Gallery, a contemporary art space in Washington, DC's Historic Anacostia neighborhood, is excited to announce its next exhibition featuring a powerful spectrum of work from the late Stevens Jay Carter (1958-2021). Award-winning DC artist Luis Del Valle curates this collection.
Stevens, a dynamic, prolific, and artistically diverse American abstract visual artist, employed a range of mediums - from painting and sculpture to clothing and decor - to articulate his many visions. In recent years, his work addressed the coronavirus pandemic and other critical social issues.
This exhibition features pieces that explore the essence of America in its many forms. Stevens' themes are socially relevant and hopeful, with titles including Amerressence, Emblematic, Corporate Corruption, Euphoria, and Silent.
A humanitarian and community organizer, Stevens extended his vision beyond his work, co-founding Project Brasas in Washington, DC, to showcase artists' work in alternative art spaces in the Penn Quarter community. In his Oakland, California neighborhood, Stevens and his wife Carol co-founded the International Peace and Art Center, hosting events that promoted peace and harmony through the arts. In Stevens' world, joy and hope ruled through musically inspired works shining a much-needed light on the redemptive possibilities of human connection. His ethos and unwavering tenacity to be a positive force through art, rendering peace and harmony, resonates brightly through his collected works.
