The Let Out traces collective memories of DMV natives to tell the story of the cultural role that go-go music plays in Washington D.C.’s changing landscape. Long weaves together interviews from attendees, band members, and other cultural contributors to capture how the scene has evolved. With a focus on the later era of the music that emerged during the early 2000’s – the bounce beat, The Let Out chronicles traditions that have become central to bands, the rise and fall of go-go venues throughout the city, and the role of black gathering spaces in facilitating community connections.
