FEB 28 | Taxilandia Anacostia Salon with Mēlani N. Douglass

The famed Taxilandia experience comes to DC! Taxilandia Anacostia features local artists Mēlani N. Douglass, John Johnson, and JaySun; these engaging conversations about neighborhood gentrification will highlight the experiences of those who live in the neighborhood and the impact these changes may have on their community.

Rooted in a legacy of healing, socially engaged artist Mēlani N. Douglass integrates wellness practices with artistic expression. Through her flagship @HealwithMelanin Salon Series, inspired by the Dark Tower salons of the Harlem Renaissance and the Colored Conventions, she curates immersive intergenerational gatherings that begin with meditation and evolve into meaningful discussions on pressing social and cultural issues. These salons are ran by youth who are learning wellness entrepreneurship, event planning, and leadership. She also leads Our Living Room, a storytelling project in partnership with the New York Times’ Headway initiative, which explores the role of home, history, and identity in shaping community narratives.

Mēlani is an Andy Warhol Wherewithal grantee, a Humanities DC Fellow, and DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Fellow. Her work has been highlighted by East of the River Magazine, Atlas Obscura, Shondaland, Bmore Art (Art of the Decade 2010-2020), American Museum Alliance Magazine, Baltimore Magazine, Artnet, and National Geographic.
