Statistics show overwhelming that 3 out of 5 Black women in the U.S. are likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. Additionally, it is common that afterwards they experience maternal mental health complications. Kay Matthews, Founder of the Shades of Blue Project, will explore the perspectives/experiences of Black women to heighten awareness in order to reduce these outcomes.
Kay Matthews is a Licensed Community Health Worker, Motivator, Advocate and Mental Health & Wellness Advisor. She lives in Houston Texas and is the Founder of The Shades of Blue Project which addresses cultural barriers in maternal mental health and servicing minority women experiencing maternal mental health complications. She has also received numerous awards from both her community and her peers, and sits on the Board and is Partners with several National organizations. Kay is now actively teaching and speaking to women of all ages to help them better understand how important it is to advocate for themselves before during and after childbirth.

Inspiration | Action is a new weekly virtual series of programs by Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum to educate and inspire participants to calls of action and become civically engaged. Experts will briefly present on four related topics based on one monthly theme. At the end of each program, participants will be provided digital resources to engage, participate in, or just learn more about the topic discussed.
