We are elated to host poet, author and activist, Khalisa Rae as she discusses her new book, Ghost in a Black Girl's Throat in conversation with award-winning author, Deesha Philyaw (Secret Lives of Church Ladies). About Khalisa: winner of the Bright Wings Poetry contest, the Furious Flower Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Prize, the White Stag Publishing Contest, among others. Currently, she serves as the founder of Think in Ink: a BIPOC Collective and the Women of Color Speak Reading series; and Assistant Editor atGlass Poetry.
About the Book: Ghost in a Black Girl’s Throat examines the haunting feeling of facing past demons while grappling with sexism, racism, and bigotry. They are all present: ancestral ghosts, societal ghosts, and spiritual, internal hauntings. This book calls out for women to speak their truth in hopes of settling the ghosts or at least being at peace with them.
About Deesha: Author of the debut short story collection, The Secret Lives of Church Ladies,which won the 2020/2021 Story Prize, and was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction, winner of the 2021 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, and a 2020 LA Times Book Prize: The Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. The Secret Lives of Church Ladies focuses on Black women, sex, and the Black church.
